Mara is an intellectual property attorney whose practice focuses on intellectual property procurement, management, and client counseling for the building and protection of the client’s business by providing individualized client service. Mara’s broad experience includes patent application drafting, U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, patentability evaluations, patent infringement and design around opinions, validity opinions and due diligence investigations. Mara’s practice also includes general client counseling, including portfolio evaluation, management and foreign filing strategies, contracts, confidentiality agreements and license agreements, and short-term and long-term IP budget preparation.

Mara’s technical expertise encompasses both mechanical devices and chemical technology. Specific areas of experience include polymer science including extrusion, casting, molding and other processing of polymers, and extruders and dies; fluid filtration for removal of particulate and chemical contaminants; semi-conductor, solid state and MEMS technology; nanotechnology; chemical formulating; distillation and alcohol processing; food science; paper technology; medical devices and medical sensors (including both in vitro and in vivo analyte sensors), ceramic structures and metal matrixes; and abrasive and grinding products and methods.

Before joining Kagan Binder, Mara spent over eleven years in private practice, first with a large IP firm in Minneapolis and then a small IP firm in St. Paul. Prior to her career as an attorney, Mara was a product development engineer and then a patent liaison with 3M.
